Inanimate things endure

Inanimate things endure

as you mother rot, a corpse

among the angels of heaven.

No more rat dog and horse,

or apple tree bowing

by the stream it drank from

in the summery meadow

of fat cattle lowing

and horses grown sleek.

O Simon Magus! Scum that followed him!

You've whored yourselves, rapacious ones, for gold,

in the cathedral

In the blue twilight a pair of heels

clips the aisle of the cathedral.

There, for a time, god is real,

in the heavy air the mind reels.

As a child it frightened her,

the High Tower, the cloistered air.

The disinfected muttered prayer.

In his cell, firing scripture,

Luther’s mad. The mad refrain

repeats, beats itself again -

tortuous maledictions,

barbed sibilants, he…

Hi Mark,

That explains your taking on Dante!

Living in London I guess you often visited Italy.  I very much like the works of the Greek author, Nikos Kazantzakis.  He wrote a wonderful novel for me, 'The Pauper of God' describing the life of St. Francis of Assissi (not 100% certain of the title in English).  He often travelled in Italy, I think he actually studied there as well, with a copy of Dante in his pocket, I recall.

I spent a couple of months travelling in Italy stating from Brindisi, visiting Rome, Pescara, Assissi, Firenze, Paduva, Venezia, Milano, Torino, Castelvecchio (something like that in the dolomite mountains in the north).  It was a wonderful country to travel in.  Giotto's fresco's in the church in Assissi, long before the earthquake damaged them, was a luminous pastel wonder.  One of the greatest things I've ever seen.

Hi Mark!

Can't remember if I thanked you for your comments on 'Reflections' so here goes... much appreciated! yes the line 'fractious' was unconscious. My poetry just writes itself but I do need to tidy it up a bit.

To Vicky P. Thank you for your comment. I wasn't able to access it, tho' - just the first few words, and now for some reason it's gone completely. Since then I have been fumbling around but not getting anywhere. It's my first time doing this kind of thing. Anyway - thanks; it's encouraging for me. When I have time I will read your stuff carefully.
Thanks,
mark
